Our long-awaited zinnia flower finally bloomed! It took all summer long, but it finally happened! 🙌

We planted these seeds back in June, and there were originally two sprouts that made it and were growing nicely—unfortunately, after telling him that flowers grow better if we talk to them and touch them, my little guy ended plucking the other sprout out 😂

But I am sooo happy with the color it ended up being! It’s the most vibrant pink, and we’ve got several other buds on the stem that should be blooming any time now!

This was the first time I tried growing anything from seed up here at this elevation (we’re almost 7,000 feet above sea level), and all my seeds grew really well at first, but everything just took so much longer to mature, especially because I started so late in the season.

We put in a fairy garden with mostly clearance flowers from our local grocery store, and after starting seeds and getting sprouts, most of them got transplanted into our new raised garden bed. This included a ton of dill and basil plants, as well as nasturtium, marigolds, more zinnia, and several other wildflowers.

The herbs did really great in a sunny spot just in pots, but as soon as I moved them all to our raised bed, they all started turning red and drying out, possibly because I have the bed too close to our air conditioning unit 🤷‍♀️

I was pretty sad about it because they were originally doing so well, but I’m thinking I’ll re-pot and bring some of the best ones in through winter, so they may do better inside.

I just kind of let the dill go crazy so most of it also bolted and flowered, but it does smell really good!

Our fairy garden’s hydrangea bushes really took of and we’ve been enjoying some of the cut flowers in vases indoors too. They’re the prettiest color—they’re the Little Lime variety, and they have a hint of pink on the edges of their flowers.

I’ve actually been amazed by how well our little clearance flowers have been doing. We initially had amazing blooms on our lisianthus, but quickly lost them to the scorching heat, but they’ve recently started flowering again, so I think they’ll start to do better as the days cool.

Also, I was really sad about it, but I had to take out the pretty pink foxgloves I had originally planted, because after some research I realized they are actually really toxic to dogs and can cause heart problems if ingested, so I had to do what’s best for Honey and tried replanting them in our rocky front yard —needless to say they didn’t survive.

We’ve also added some new friends we found at another dollar tree — so we now have a hedgehog 🦔, fox 🦊, and raccoon 🦝 added to the fairy forest! The dollar tree solar lights are kind of what you’d expect for paying $1.25 — they don’t typically stay in the ground and it’s a hit or miss whether they turn on at night. Also, our little painted rock has mostly washed out with all the watering, but it’s still a fun addition. We’ve been adding new rocks and pinecones with each of our summer additions too.
